Tractor-Trailer Crash Shuts Down I-75 for Five Hours in Cobb County

July 14, 2018

COBB COUNTY, GA. – July 9, 2018 (ajc.com) A tractor-trailer crash in Cobb County shut down Interstate 75 North for hours on July 9. An online article from ajc.com describes the crash.*

At approximately 5:30 a.m., 38-year-old John Thurston, of Millen, Georgia, was traveling northbound on I-75 in a tractor-trailer loaded with scrap metal. Near Wade Green Road and Hickory Grove Road, Thurston fell asleep, according to Cobb County Police Department spokesperson Sarah O-Hara. Thurston then drifted off the roadway, hitting a series of concrete and metal barriers before slamming through a guardrail. Thereafter, the tractor-trailer hit a drainage ditch, overturned, hit a sound barrier wall, and caught on fire. The fire ignited the barrier wall.

Thurston was ejected from the tractor-trailer and transported to WellStar Kennestone Hospital with non-life threatening injuries. It does not appear any other vehicles were involved in the crash, and no other injuries have been reported.

The crash resulted in I-75 North being completely shut down for five hours between Kennesaw and Acworth. During this time, drivers used Highway 74 and I-575 North to Highway 92 as traveling alternatives. Crews finally turned the tractor-trailer upright and moved the wreckage onto the right shoulder at approximately 10:30 a.m., which allowed some lanes of the interstate to open.

The Georgia Department of Transportation says the sound barrier wall will be repaired, and damage from the crash will not result in a delay of the I-75 Express Lane Project.

Cobb County authorities are continuing to investigate the collision and ask that anyone with information contact the Cobb County Special Traffic Unit by calling (770) 499-3987.
