Georgia Driver Could Face Charges in Teen Bicyclist Fatality in Tift County, GA

TIFT COUNTY, GA. – July 1, 2018 ( According to an online report from, the driver who ran into the back of a teenager and her mother could face charges, pending the results of blood and urine tests.*

Shortly before 8 a.m. on June 30, 18-year-old Sophia Fisher and her mother, Lynda Fisher, 48, were riding their bicycles on Willis Still Road, just west of Adams Road in Tift County, Georgia. Suddenly, a pickup truck ran into them from behind. Lynda was transported to Tift Regional Medical Center with minor injuries. Sophia died at the scene.  

Georgia State Patrol indicates Lynda and Sophia were riding in the proper lane and were both wearing helmets. Troopers are investigating the cause of the accident, including whether speed or intoxication were factors. The driver of the pickup, who has not been identified, reportedly agreed to blood and urine tests, the results of which are not yet available. Pending the results of the tests and the investigation, the driver could face charges in connection with the crash and Sophia’s death. The investigation is ongoing, and no additional details have yet been released. 

According to data from the Georgia Governor’s Office of Highway Safety, Tift County was the site of 1,643 vehicle accidents in 2016. These accidents caused 350 injuries and 12 fatalities. This represents a rather significant increase from years prior, particularly for fatalities. In 2012, a total of 1,168 vehicle accidents occurred in Tift County, causing 325 injuries and one death. Between 2012 and 2016, no bicyclists were killed in vehicle accidents in Tift County.
