Georgia Sheriff’s Officer Injured by Flying Debris in Vehicle Wreck in Gainesville, Georgia

GAINESVILLE, GA. – June 30, 2018 ( According to an online news report from, a Hall County Sheriff’s Officer was injured June 30 after being struck by flying debris from a vehicle wreck in Gainesville, Georgia.*

Just after midnight on June 30, Hall County Sheriff’s Sgt. Matt Venable was in the middle of a traffic stop on Browns Bridge Road in Gainesville. A Ford F-550 truck pulling a utility trailer was stopped in the center turning lane, as was Sgt. Venable. Venable was talking with the driver of the vehicle, Dario Triana, 21, while standing in the center turning lane, when a southbound vehicle struck a portion of the trailer that was sitting in the southbound left lane of Browns Bridge Road. 

Following the impact, the trailer turned counterclockwise, stopping in the northbound left lane of the roadway. Immediately thereafter, a northbound driver struck also struck the trailer. The second impact sent an unknown object flying out of the trailer, which struck Venable in the head. Venable was transported to Northeast Georgia Medical Center with serious, but non-life threatening injuries, according to Georgia State Patrol. 

The driver of the southbound vehicle involved in the collision, 30-year-old Mario Rodriguez Castro, of Marietta, Georgia, was not injured. The driver of the northbound vehicle, 34-year-old Gabrie Torres De Arellano, of Gainesville, was also not injured. A backseat passenger in the F-550 truck, 48-year-old Gabriela Hernandez-Arza, sustained head injuries and was transported to Northeast Georgia Medical Center for treatment. Her current condition is not known. 

Authorities continue to investigate the collision and have not released additional information at this time.
