Covington Resident Hit By Vehicle While Checking Mail

COVINGTON, GA. – June 12, 2018 (covnews.com) According to an online report from covnews.com, a pedestrian was injured June 12 when struck by a vehicle while checking the mail outside a Covington, Georgia, residence.*

At approximately 7 p.m. on June 12, Georgia State Patrol responded to a report of an injured pedestrian in the 1400 block of Georgia Highway 212 in unincorporated Covington, Georgia. Troopers said a person, who has not been identified, was checking the mail outside a residence when a GMC Envoy struck the person. The GMC driver, who has also not been identified, was reportedly driving eastbound on Ga. 212 and lost control of the vehicle, traveling into the south edge of the roadway and striking the pedestrian. 

After impact, the pedestrian was trapped under the GMC and dragged until the vehicle came to an uncontrolled stop against some trees. Troopers report that the pedestrian was injured and transported to a nearby hospital. His or her current condition is not known. It is not clear whether the driver of the GMC sustained any injuries. It does not appear any other vehicles or people were involved in the incident. 

Georgia State Patrol is continuing to investigate the incident and has not released additional information at this time. The cause of the collision is not known. 

According to data from the Georgia Governor’s Office of Highway Safety, 232 pedestrians died in traffic-related accidents in the state of Georgia in 2016. This number represents a significant increase from the two years prior. In 2014, 163 pedestrians were killed in traffic accidents in Georgia, and 194 pedestrians died in traffic accidents in 2015.
