Runaway Trash Truck Crashes into Atlanta Home, Injures Resident

June 20, 2018

ATLANTA, GA. – June 13, 2018 (fox5atlanta.com) According to an online news report from fox5atlanta.com, a runaway City of Atlanta trash truck crashed into a home on June 13 and injured a woman inside.*

At approximately 10:45 a.m. on June 13, an Atlanta trash crew was working its route in the 4300 block of Kimball Road. The City of Atlanta Department of Public Works indicates a crew member exited the truck to serve a collection point. He reportedly placed the parking brake, but the brake experienced an equipment failure, and the truck began rolling down a hill on Kimball Road.

Witnesses say the truck jumped a curb, narrowly missed a power pole, and crashed into the side of 78-year-old Martha Hodges’s home. Reports indicate Hodges was injured in the crash and was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment of possible head trauma. Her current condition is not known. Three of Hodges’s relatives were also in the home at the time but were not injured. Hodges’s grandson Thaddius said he was awoken by the crash and thought at first that it was a tornado or a shooting.

The trash truck also struck the front corner of a neighboring home in its path. The owners of this home have not been identified, and no other injuries have reported. Both homes sustained significant damage, and debris from the back of the truck was littered across the front lawns. The crash also caused a gas leak and power outages, which prompted Atlanta Fire Rescue and Atlanta Gas Light to respond to the scene.

Authorities and City officials are investigating the incident and have not released additional information at this time.
