Motorcyclist Dies in Accident on Highway 168 in Berrien County, Georgia

BERRIEN COUNTY, GA. – June 10, 2018 ( According to an online news report from, a 72-year-old motorcyclist died June 8 in a traffic accident on Highway 168 in Berrien County, Georgia.*

Georgia State Patrol indicates a vehicle was traveling eastbound on Highway 168 and slowed down to turn left onto Northsouth Road. At the same time, 72-year-old Eric Hiam was riding his motorcycle westbound on Highway 168. Hiam crashed into the vehicle as it was turning left, and he died on the scene from his injuries. The driver of the car, who has not been identified, was not injured in the collision.

Troopers with the Georgia State Patrol are investigating the accident and have not released additional information at this time. It is not clear whether the car turned out in front of Hiam’s motorcycle or whether the driver of the car might face any charges in connection with the crash and Hiam’s death. 

According to the Governors Highway Safety Administration (GHSA), almost 5,000 motorcyclists died in 2017 in the United States due to traffic collisions. While approximately 300 fewer motorcyclists lost their lives in traffic accidents in 2017 than the previous year, the 2017 data shows that motorcycle riders are still 28 times more likely to die in vehicle collisions than occupants of passenger cars. 

As outlined in a GHSA report, 30 states in the U.S. saw a reduction in fatal motorcycle accidents in 2017 compared to 2016. However, 18 states reported higher numbers of motorcycle fatalities in 2017 than in 2016. Many of these accidents can be attributed to distracted driving or driving under the influence, and many of those killed were not wearing helmets.
