Particularly in large metropolitan areas, people are increasingly traveling places by foot. Because of the spikes in both pedestrian traffic and distracted driving, pedestrian deaths have been on the rise in the state of Georgia and across the United States. The Georgia Governor’s Office of Highway Safety reports that 193 Georgia pedestrians were killed in motor vehicle accidents in 2015. This number represents almost 14 percent of all motor vehicle fatalities in the state during that year. The number of pedestrian deaths increased by more than 18 percent in Georgia from 2014 to 2015.

Law enforcement and state agencies encourage both pedestrians and drivers to take steps to prevent pedestrian injuries and fatalities. Pedestrians should wear brightly colored or reflective clothing, especially at night, and take care to use sidewalks and crosswalks whenever possible. Pedestrians should not assume drivers see them but should try to make eye contact with drivers before crossing in front of them. Drivers need to eliminate all distractions while behind the wheel and pay close attention to their surroundings. Drivers should also always maintain safe speeds and watch for walkers or bicyclists, particularly on the side of the road and at intersections.
