Driver Killed in Walker County Vehicle Accident

WALKER COUNTY, GA. – June 4, 2018 (chattanoogan.com) A driver died June 3 in a single-vehicle accident in Walker County, Georgia, according to an online news report by chattanoogan.com.*

On the morning of June 3, Robert Chapman was traveling westbound on Johnson Road in Walker County when he crossed the centerline into the eastbound lanes of the road. He then crossed Mission Ridge Road and drove into a Kwik E-Mart parking lot, where he hit a concrete pad. His Nissan Altima then went into a nearby wooded area and struck a large tree.  

Emergency responders tragically pronounced Chapman dead at the scene. He was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the collision, according to authorities, and reportedly had been speeding on Johnson Road. No additional information about the accident has been released. Georgia State Patrol is investigating. It does not appear any other vehicles or people were involved in the accident. 

Walker County is located in the northwestern corner of the state of Georgia. Some of its major roadways include U.S. Route 27 and State Routes 1, 2, 95, and 189. According to the Georgia Governor’s Office of Highway Safety, in 2016, nearly 1,400 motor vehicle accidents occurred in Walker County. This number represents an increase of about 100 accidents from the previous year. The accidents in 2016 resulted in 391 injuries and nine fatalities. One-third of the 2016 traffic-related fatalities involved alcohol or speeding. 

During a five-year studied period by the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety, between 2012 and 2016, the highest number of motor vehicle fatalities occurred in 2015. In this year, 11 people died in traffic crashes. At least four of the people killed in vehicle accidents in 2015 were not wearing seat belts.
