Crash Involving a Car and a Motorcycle Kills One in Deluca, Georgia

June 03, 2018

DELUCA, GA- According, one person has tragically died as the result of a car accident in Gwinnett County. The collision involved one car and one motorcycle.*

The crash occurred on Highway 316 in the westbound lanes on Saturday, June 2, 2018, a little before 10 p.m. The road was shut down for emergency crews and the investigation into the accident. The cause of the crash is not yet known, and the identity of the victim has not been released.

Motorcyclists are at a much higher risk ofbeing killed in a traffic accident than are occupants of passenger vehicles. In addition to the fact that they offer fewer protections, they also are less visible to other drivers and are more likely to be overlooked by drivers who are merging, turning or changing lanes than are other larger vehicles.

In Georgia, over 10% of all traffic-related deaths were motorcyclists. The number of motorcyclists killed on Georgia roads has been increasing every year. In 2016, there were 1,560 people killed in car accidents within the state, and 173 of them were motorcyclists.

The best protection for bikers is a helmet. Helmets prevent deaths an estimated 37% of the time, and they acreeven more effective at preventing brain injuries. Despite the added protection provided by helmets, the number of motorcyclists not wearing helmets in Georgia has increased. The Governor’s Office of Highway Safety in Georgia estimates that helmet use in 2016 saved about 96 people's lives. It is illegal to operate a motorcycle in Georgia without wearing a helmet. If everyone abided by this law, additional lives could be saved.
