The Georgia Department of Natural Resources Urges People to Avoid Drinking and Boating

June 02, 2018

DECATUR COUNTY, GA.- May 31, 2018 (  According to an online news report at, the Georgia Department of Natural Resources Reminds Boaters to not drink and boat.*

With the summer soon upon us and July 4thjust around the corner, wardens from the Georgia Department of Natural Resources reminds boaters about drinking and boating. Per their message, boaters are reminded not to mix alcohol and drugs while boating.

"BUI and alcohol is one of the main causes of boat accidents in the state of Georgia," per Ryan Cleveland, Game Warden for Georgia Department of Natural Resources. "Drinking alcohol, or drugs, any type of impairment will result in a higher increase of an accident or death."

In 2017, the Georgia Department of Natural Resources issued citations to one hundred and eighty nine boaters who were boating while being under the influence.  About twelve or more of these citations occurred in the Flint River and Lake Seminole areas.

While the Georgia Department of Natural Resources aims to catch all those boating under the influence, it is not always possible.

According to Cleveland, "it's harder to detect than a DUI, so to speak. There's just not many of us out here to look for it and to find it.  It's definitely, it's something common that goes on."

Those boating under the influence are often detected following having to be stopped for minor infractions. These infractions include children not wearing their life jackets, or lights on a boat that are not turned on.

"During that stop, we do our boat and safety inspection. You know, life jackets, fire extinguishers, registration. It develops into a suspicion where we think a BUI might be taking place," states Cleveland. "From there, we do a little more investigating to develop probable cause."
