2 Dead After Man Drives SUV into a North Carolina Restaurant

NORTH CAROLINA – May 20, 2018 (  According to an online news report at, two people tragically died after a man drove his SUV into a restaurant; police calling the accident a “domestic incident.”*

Two people were killed in the incident where a man slammed his SUV into the Surf and Turf Lodge in Bessemer City, North Carolina.  Kaitlyn Self, a deputy of the Gaston County Sheriff’s Office, was killed by the driver of the SUV, her father, sixty year old Roger Self, during the incident as well as Amanda Self, Roger Self’s daughter-in-law.

It is being reported that Mr. Self drove into the restaurant on purpose.  Specifically, he went into the restaurant and had them seated, then went outside and intentionally slammed into the restaurant with his SUV, knowing exactly where Amanda and his daughter were located.  

Mr. Self was arrested and taken to a county jail where he is being charged with two counts of first degree murder.  He is scheduled to appear before a judge today, Monday, May 21, 2018.

At the scene of the incident which occurred right around 12 p.m. on Sunday, Self’s jeep was located “completely in the building.”

Numerous agencies are involved in reviewing the crime scene, including Bessemer City Police, Gaston County Police, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police and the Highway Patrol.  A part of North 14thStreet where the incident occurred was blocked off for quite a while as investigators examined the scene.  

While it is not clear how many people were injured, police have indicated that “several others” were hurt in the incident. These individuals were taken to area hospitals for evaluation and treatment.
