One Cobb County Road is Site of Nearly 200 Vehicle Accidents

May 20, 2018

COBB COUNTY, GA. – May 18, 2018 (accessatlanta.com) According to an online report from accessatlanta.com, hundreds of vehicle accidents have occurred at the same area in Cobb County, Georgia, in just two years.*

In Marietta, Georgia, the stretch of road on Powder Springs Street between Cunningham Road and Baltimore Place has been the site of almost 200 vehicle crashes in two years. In 2016 and 2017, 181 vehicle collisions took place in this area of Marietta. Cobb County Police said greater traffic congestion and distracted driving have been the primary causes of the accidents. Sgt. Wayne Delk of the Cobb County Police Department said a lot of rear-end collisions occurred on the stretch of roadway during periods of start-and-stop traffic.

In addition, drivers often try to turn left at the area, where they have to cross several lanes of traffic. Particularly during periods of rush-hour traffic, this creates a hazard for other motorists. Some members of the public think a median should be constructed or traffic cameras installed to try to deter drivers from making poor decisions on the stretch of road.

The section of Powder Springs Street where all of these accidents have occurred is under the oversight of the Georgia Department of Transportation. While the DOT says its options for addressing the number of vehicle accidents might be limited, the department says it is looking into reported issues and the solutions it might be able to implement.

As a whole, Cobb County is the site of numerous vehicle accidents each year. Data from the Georgia Governor’s Office of Highway Safety shows that almost 35,000 vehicle crashes occurred in the county in 2016, leading to 8,470 injuries and 59 deaths.
