Georgia’s rate of traffic-related fatalities has been increasing in recent years. In Houston County, the number of people killed in accidents increased from 8 in 2014, to 17 in 2016. Five of the people killed in 2016 were killed in alcohol-related accidents. The number of crashes caused by speeding vehicles increased as well, with 4 people dying in accidents in which speed was a factor in 2016.

While the number of people killed in traffic accidents across the entire United States has increased in the past few years, Georgia has seen a spike that is much higher than the national average. The state is attempting to curb the number of traffic-related deaths, as demonstrated by the recent implementation of a ban on handheld devices, which is intended to cut down on the number of accidents caused by distracted driving. The new law will take effect on July 1, 2018.
