Police Seek Driver Who Hit Subway Sandwich Shop and Left Scene
HINESVILLE, GA- WSAV.com reports that the Hinesville Police are searching for a woman who drove her vehicle into a Subway sandwich shop on Monday, May 15, 2018 at about 5 p.m. Witnesses say that the woman drove into the parking lot, hit the building, stayed there shortly, then backed up and drove east on General Screven Way, leaving the scene before authorities arrived.*
The car was described as a grey car, either a Honda or a Hyundai, with Georgia plates. The woman was driving with a male passenger when she struck the shop.
While no injuries were reported, the collision caused an estimated $15,000 in property damage. The Subway shop is now closed for repairs. Police are urging people to come forward if they have information about the accident.
Hit-and-run accidents occur more than people would think, and while the vast majority (about 74%) of them cause only property damage, they can also be deadly. One of the biggest problems is that when drivers flee the scene and a person was injured, the driver can leave the injured person with no way to get help. Because of the risks presented by hit-and-run accidents, the penalties are steep.
In many cases, the drivers who leave the scene do so because they are in violation of a law. For instance, many times they are driving under the influence, or without a license. Young drivers are also more likely to leave the scene of a crash, with the majority of hit-and-run drivers being young men. One study indicated that only 14% of drivers who fled the scene were women.
