Teacher Fights to Make Woodstock Intersection Safer
WOODSTOCK, GA- Fox5atlanta.com reports that a teacher has been pushing to see changes made to an intersection in Woodstock where a child and two women were struck and killed in September 2017. The intersection in question is where Hubbard Road and Arnold Mill Road cross.*
The teacher, Scott Bagwill, lives near the intersection and said the tragedy caused him to want change. Bagwill started a petition to add traffic controls and sidewalks to the area. More than 5,000 people signed the petition. The City Council and the mayor have now agreed to implement the proposed changes.
The changes are welcomed by people in the area. The intersection is close to a park that regularly hosts concerts in the summer. Bagwill hopes that the changes can prevent another similar tragedy from occurring. The City of Woodstock has plans to complete the changes by the summer before the start of the summer concert season.
Pedestrians are killed in traffic accidents at a rate of about 15 per day. The rate of pedestrians killed has been increasing year to year nationally, and in Georgia specifically. Georgia has implemented programs to increase pedestrian safety in the state, where the city of Atlanta was determined to be the eighth most dangerous city for pedestrians in the entire country. Despite efforts to lower risks to foot traffic, in 2017, the number of pedestrians killed in Georgia increased by 11% over the previous year. Part of the problem is occurring on interstates where pedestrians are not expected.
Nearly 50% of the pedestrian fatalities involved the driver or the pedestrian using alcohol.
