Los Gatos Starbucks Struck by Telsa on Thursday

May 13, 2018

LOS GATOS, CA- Nbcbayarea.com reports that a Starbucks in Los Gatos was struck by a Tesla on Thursday, May 10, 2018. The accident occurred at about 4 p.m. The Tesla crashed through the shop’s front doors and nearly made it all the way to the counter. Although the shop was open at the time of the accident, there are no reported injuries.*

The driver of the Tesla is reportedly cooperating with the investigation. She has stated that she believed that her vehicle was in park and claims that she does not know how the collision happened.

Firefighters took efforts on Thursday evening to help reinforce the shop’s damaged structure.

The incident raised questions regarding whether the Tesla was on autopilot when it drove into the shop, but according to police, the car was not.

Tesla’s vehicles have autopilot features that are capable of steering, accelerating, and braking. However, the system is not intended to function as a fully self-driving vehicle and the person operating the car is meant to have their hands on the wheel at all times. Several deadly collisions involving Tesla’s that were in autopilot mode when they crashed have caused the company some bad press in recent months. However, human errors still account for most accidents, and about 60 times every day someone in the United States drives into a commercial building without any autopilot features being engaged. Most of the time, people drive into buildings because they hit the gas pedal rather than the brake, or because of operator errors including situations where they were speeding when approaching the building and were not able to stop in time.
