“Smart” Traffic Signals Coming to Gwinnett County, Georgia

May 13, 2018

GWINNETT COUNTY, GA- The wabe.org has reported that Gwinnett County, Georgia is planning to install new automated traffic signals on certain major roadways.*

Wireless connections in the cameras help to regulate the flow of traffic. Ronald Reagan Parkway, Old Peachtree Road, State Route 316, and Five Forks Trickum Road are all going to get the new lights, which are designed to help efficiently manage rush hour traffic.

By coordinating the traffic signals, it becomes possible for drivers to hit several green lights in a row rather driving and stopping frequently. This would permit a smoother flow of traffic. Traffic officials are also able to intervene and take control of the signals when necessary. For instance, if an accident occurred, officials would have the ability to adjust the traffic signals in a way that would minimize the resulting congestion.

The lights will be funded largely by the Georgia Department of Transportation. The cost associated with installing the new system is an estimated 4.5 million dollars. The upgrade will include the installation of 55 traffic-monitoring cameras as well as 31 technological upgrades to traffic signals.

Traffic signals that have the ability to change based on real-time traffic conditions are increasing in popularity across the United States. Cities that have installed such technology have found that it has the ability to decrease the time of people’s commutes as well as the costs associated with commuting.

Some areas have seen a reduction in travel time of more than 40%, and in Bellevue, Washington, installation of the lights has been estimated to save around $9 to $12 million a year for local commuters.
