43 Georgia Residents Arrested for U-Haul Insurance Scams

May 12, 2018

MACON, GA. – May 8, 2018 (myajc.com) According to a news report by myajc.com, more than 40 people across the state of Georgia have been arrested for committing insurance fraud with rented U-Haul trucks. More than one-third of those people are from Macon, Georgia.*

Authorities arrested 43 people for carrying out insurance fraud to the tune of $30,000. They are accused of staging accidents with U-Haul trucks in order to receive an insurance payout. The largest individual payout has been about $6,500. Now these people are facing fines and court costs larger than the insurance payments they received, and some are looking at jail time.

The typical tactic they have used involves one or more people renting a U-Haul vehicle and buying insurance for the vehicle during the rental period. They then drive the U-Haul to a scheduled location, where another person is waiting to crash into the U-Haul. The U-Haul driver then claims fault in the accident and subsequent injuries. If the U-Haul insurance pays on the claim, the people involved in the scheme split the money.

It is not easy to receive U-Haul insurance payouts because U-Haul knows this type of scam occurs, and the company works closely with law enforcement to pin down successful and would-be fraudsters. Of the 43 people arrested in Georgia, 15 were from Macon, 12 were from Atlanta, and seven were from Newnan. Other residences included Savannah, Augusta, Fairburn, Byron, Riverdale, Jonesboro, Fort Valley, and Hephzibah.

So far, 26 people have already been convicted, most of them placed on varying durations of probation. Two people have received jail sentences — one person for six months and one person for one year.
