South Carolina’s Most Dangerous Roadways

SPARTANBURG COUNTY, S.C. – April 30, 2018 ( An online article from analyzed the roadways in South Carolina that see the most deadly crashes.* 

Interstate 85 and Interstate 26 in Spartanburg County were the sites of the largest numbers of fatal wrecks during the timeframe analyzed, 2011 through 2017. During that time, 41 people died on I-85, and 30 people died on I-26. In addition, 20 people died on Highway 29 in the county, which includes Main Street, and 17 people died on Highway 176. Thirteen people died in vehicle accidents on Highway 221. 

In Upstate South Carolina. I-85 was again the site of the most fatal vehicle wrecks. A total of 112 people died in 100 vehicle crashes on I-85 between 2011 and 2017. The second deadliest road was Highway 25 running through Greenville and Greenwood counties, and White Horse Road in Greenville County accounted for 44 deaths. White Horse Road was the deadliest single stretch of road in all of the counties in Upstate South Carolina. 

During the studied time period, McCormick County saw the fewest wrecks and fatality accidents. There were 7 crashes on Highway 28, resulting in 10 deaths, 3 crashes on Greenwood Highway, resulting in 4 deaths, and 1 crash on Pierce Road, resulting in 1 death. Abbeville County had the second-lowest number of crashes and fatalities. There were 7 crashes on Highway 28, resulting in 9 deaths, 3 crashes on Highway 184, resulting in 5 deaths, and 4 crashes on Highway 71, resulting in 4 deaths.
