City of Morrow Pushing for Changes to Exit Ramp Involved in Numerous Accidents

May 04, 2018

MORROW, GA. – May 2, 2018 (wsbradio.com) The City of Morrow, Georgia, is requesting for the Georgia Department of Transportation to make changes to an exit ramp on Interstate 75 that has been the site of numerous vehicle accidents.*

In March, two teenagers were involved in a fatality accident on the I-75 North exit to Morrow, Exit 233. Cristina Pavon-Baker, 17, was driving at the time and was injured in the wreck. Her classmate, 18-year-old Mikayla Penn, tragically died in the wreck. Authorities say Pavon-Baker was driving too fast and was unable to navigate the curve on the exit ramp. The vehicle she was driving left the roadway, rolled over, and crashed into a wooded area.

Within 24 hours of this accident, according to law enforcement, another vehicle left the roadway at the same location on the same exit ramp. The car landed on its roof, and an occupant had to be extricated through the back window. Many drivers mistakenly continue straight into the wooded area off of the ramp, instead of turning into the ramp’s curve, leading to 31 crashes in the last five years. Most of these crashes have resulted in severe injuries. The majority of the accidents involve speeding, and the vehicles flip and crash into the nearby trees, local authorities say.

Clayton County is adding signs to the exit ramp to warn drivers about the curve ahead, but Morrow officials are pushing for the Georgia Department of Transportation to redesign the ramp. The signs will be added in the next few weeks. The Georgia DOT has yet to respond about whether it will consider a redesign or a construction project on the ramp.
