Major Fatality Accident Halts Traffic in Barrow County, Georgia

BARROW COUNTY, GA. – May 2, 2018 ( An early morning accident in Barrow County on May 2 caused one fatality and backed up traffic for hours, according to an online news report from* 

The wreck occurred at approximately 8 a.m. on Ga. 82 near the intersection with Jones Road in Barrow County, Georgia. According to authorities, the collision involved only one vehicle, and one person died. Traffic was backed up and detoured while emergency responders worked on the scene.  

Barrow County authorities are investigating the accident and have not released additional information at this time. The deceased victim has not been identified, and authorities have not indicated how the crash occurred. 

Barrow County is located in the north-central portion of the state of Georgia. It’s estimated population is around 75,000, and its major highways include Interstate 85, U.S. Route 29, and State highways 8, 11, 53, 82, 211, and 324. 

According to data collected by the Georgia Governor’s Office of Highway Safety, Barrow County was the site of 1,827 vehicle accidents in 2016. During those accidents, 539 people were injured, and 10 people were fatally injured. This was a substantial increase from the previous year (2015), during which only 330 accidents occurred. Seventy-four of the 2015 accidents resulted in injuries, but a greater percentage of accidents were fatal — 12 people died from vehicle accident injuries in 2015. 

The 2016 data from the Office of Highway Safety is more on-pace with the average figures in Barrow County. During a five-year span from 2012 to 2016, the county averaged approximately 1,200 vehicle accidents a year. Approximately 11 fatal accidents occurred each year during this timeframe.
