UPDATE: State Patrol Still Investigating Fatal Highway 20 Crash in Bartow County, Georgia

April 29, 2018

BARTOW COUNTY, GA. – April 25, 2018 ( According to an online report from, the Georgia State Patrol’s Specialized Collision Reconstruction Team is still investigating an April 24 crash on Highway 20 that resulted in one fatality.*

Georgia State Patrol previously reported that at approximately 7:30 a.m. on April 24, 44-year-old Donna Misti Kirkland, of Rome, Georgia, was driving her 2011 Kia Soul eastbound on Highway 20 near Kingston in Bartow County. A 2015 Dodge Ram was traveling westbound along Highway 20 at the same time and suddenly crossed the center median just east of Hardin Bridge Road. The Dodge Ram struck a Ford F-350 that was traveling next to Kirkland in the eastbound lanes. The F-350 then ran into Kirkland’s Kia, and both vehicles went off the shoulder of the road.

Kirkland tragically died from her injuries. The driver of the Dodge Ram, 41-year-old Martina Nanette Couey, of Cartersville, Georgia, was trapped in her vehicle but was pulled out by first responders. She was transported to Floyd Medical Center for treatment and was reportedly alert before leaving the scene. The driver of the Ford F-350, 36-year-old Nathaniel Ritchie, of Rome, Georgia, was reportedly not injured in the crash.

The Georgia State Patrol’s Specialized Collision Reconstruction Team is investigating the circumstances of the crash. Initial reports indicate that weather might have been a factor in the crash. It was raining at the time of the accident, and authorities indicate Couey’s Dodge Ram hydroplaned prior to the first collision. Georgia State Patrol is continuing to analyze the crash to determine whether charges will be filed against Couey for the crash and Kirkland’s death.
