Georgia Authorities Shoot Handcuffed Man Driving Police Car

April 20, 2018

CARROLLTON, GA. -  April 16, 2018 (patch.com) A news report by patch.com indicates that the Georgia Bureau of Investigation is looking into an incident in which police officers shot and killed a man who was driving a police vehicle toward them. The man had been handcuffed and was in the police car when he gained control of the car.*

At approximately 10:20 a.m. on April 14, Carroll County authorities responded to a call about a disturbance between a man and his landlord on Littleriver Road in Carrollton. An officer went to the scene and made contact with 32-year-old Jessie Thedford, who lived at the residence and was disputing with his landlord. Thedford was reportedly not cooperative and was detained by the first officer. A second officer then responded, and the officers discovered what they suspected to be methamphetamine on the person of Thedford.

Thedford was placed under arrest and placed in the back of a Carroll County Sheriff’s Office vehicle with his hands reportedly cuffed behind his back. Somehow, Thedford moved his hands in front of him, slipped under the partition in middle of the car, and maneuvered into the driver’s seat. He then started driving the vehicle toward the officers and the landlord. Thedford would not stop the car, despite verbal commands. One of the deputies on scene then fired into the car and shot Thedford.

Thedford was transported to Tanner Medical Center in Carrollton, where he later died from his injuries. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation’s Decatur Crime Lab will be performing an autopsy. No officers were injured in the incident.

GBI will perform a full investigation and then turn the case over to the Coweta Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office for review.
