21-Year-Old Charged with Vehicular Homicide in Hall County, Georgia Crash

HALL COUNTY, GA. – April 13, 2018 (Macon.com) A 21-year-old man has been charged with vehicular homicide in connection with a single-vehicle accident in Hall County that left one person dead. The crash details are reported by ajc.com.*

On the morning of April 13, around 7 a.m., 21-year-old Paul Stevens, of Dahlonega, was driving his 2002 Nissan Xterra southbound on Interstate 985 just south of Oakwood near the Plainview Road overpass. Stevens reportedly fell asleep while he was driving and caused a wreck. 

A release by Georgia State Patrol says Stevens left the roadway near the Plainview Road overpass and drove into the woods, where he hit a cement object and crashed into a tree. First responders pronounced Tuthill dead at the scene.

Gainesville Police and Fire Department, along with Georgia State Patrol responded to the scene. Stevens reportedly admitted to officers on scene that he had fallen asleep. As a result, he has been charged with vehicular homicide and failure to maintain a lane. 

Authorities are still investigating the incident and have not released additional information at this time. No information about Stevens’s current condition is available at this time. 

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that survey data shows one out of every 25 adults has fallen asleep at the wheel within the last 30 days. Fatigued driving and falling asleep at the wheel resulted in 72,000 vehicle collisions in the United States in 2013, which caused 44,000 injuries and 800 deaths. Approximately 6,000 fatal vehicle accidents are caused by drowsy driving every year, according to the CDC.
