April 16, 2018

ATLANTA, GA. – April 10, 2018 (wltx.com) According to a news report by wltx.com, an Uber driver in Atlanta suffered a medical emergency and crashed the Uber vehicle, killing one passenger. The Uber driver and a second passenger were injured in the accident.*

Shortly before midnight on April 8, an Uber driver was carrying two passengers southbound in Atlanta near the intersection of West Peachtree Street and Ivan Allen Boulevard. Atlanta Police say around this time, the driver suffered a “medical emergency,” during which the driver swerved across the two lanes, crossed into northbound traffic, and hit a utility pole.

The driver and the passenger in the front seat of the vehicle were taken to a nearby hospital, where they are reportedly in stable condition. The passenger in the backseat was also transported to a nearby hospital, where she was pronounced dead. This passenger has been identified as 65-year-old Florida resident Shirley Brooks. Brooks was reportedly planning to move or was in the process of moving to Georgia at the time of the crash.

Atlanta Police are investigating the cause of the crash and have not released additional details at this time. The Uber driver and the other passenger in the vehicle have not yet been identified. Police reported that, at this time, the department does not anticipate charges will be filed against the driver regarding the accident.

In a statement, a spokesperson for Uber said the company was “terribly saddened by this tragic incident,” and that the company extended its condolences to the families and loved ones of everyone involved in the accident.
