Georgia Woman Killed After Being Struck by Tractor Trailer on I-81

SHENANDOAH, VA. – April 10, 2018 ( According to a news report by, a Georgia woman was killed April 7 in an accident on I-81 in Virginia. The woman was reportedly struck by a tractor trailer while she was standing on the interstate.*

At approximately 1:20 a.m. on April 7, Sheree Smith, a 27-year-old from Allenwood, Georgia, was a passenger in a 2006 GMC SUV traveling southbound on Interstate 81. The driver of the vehicle was 59-year-old Wayne Emmanuel Fields, of Hephzibah, Georgia. According to Virginia State Police, Smith and Fields were having an argument in the car and pulled over onto the shoulder in Shenandoah County, north of New Market. 

While on the shoulder of I-81 near mile marker 265, both Smith and Fields exited the vehicle. In continuing the argument, police say Smith walked into the right lane of the interstate. She was then struck by a 2010 Volvo tractor trailer. Tragically, Smith was killed immediately and pronounced dead at the scene. Responders to the scene included Virginia State Police, the Virginia Department of Transportation, Mount Jackson Fire and Rescue, Mount Jackson Police, the Shenandoah County Sheriff’s Office, the VSP Motorcarrier Safety Team, and the VSP Crash Reconstruction Team. 

Smith had two children who were in the vehicle at the time she was struck and killed. Fields has been charged with two counts of felony child endangerment in connection with Smith’s 8-year-old daughter and 2-year-old son. Police do not anticipate charges will be filed against the driver of the tractor trailer. 

Virginia State Police are still investigating the circumstances of the accident and have not released additional information at this time. The driver of the tractor trailer has not been identified, and information about whether he was injured in the accident is not available.
