At approximately 1:20 a.m. on April 7, Sheree Smith, a 27-year-old from Allenwood, Georgia, was a passenger in a 2006 GMC SUV traveling southbound on Interstate 81. The driver of the vehicle was 59-year-old Wayne Emmanuel Fields, of Hephzibah, Georgia. According to Virginia State Police, Smith and Fields were having an argument in the car and pulled over onto the shoulder in Shenandoah County, north of New Market.

While on the shoulder of I-81 near mile marker 265, both Smith and Fields exited the vehicle. In continuing the argument, police say Smith walked into the right lane of the interstate. Smith had two children who were in the vehicle at the time she was struck and killed. Police do not anticipate charges will be filed against the driver of the tractor trailer.
