Trucker Bobby Elrod, of Chickamauga, Honored for 5 Million Accident-Free Miles

March 29, 2018

CHICKAMAUGA, GA. – February 28, 2018 (cdllife.com) YRC Freight recently honored one of its drivers for superior safety, according to a report by cdllife.com.*

Trucker Bobby Elrod, of Chickamauga, has spent 45 years on the road and driven 5 million miles without a single accident. Elrod was recognized for his accomplishment March 6 at a ceremony at YRC Freight’s Chattanooga, Tennessee, terminal. He received a plaque, a watch, a commemorative jacket, and a new trailer. YRC also planned to mark the milestone by donating 50 children’s car seats — one seat for every 100,000 miles driven by Elrod — to the Tennessee Highway Patrol.

YRC Freight Safety Director Terry Budimlija extended his appreciation to Elrod, saying he tipped his “safety hat” to the driver. He also elaborated on how impressive a feat Elrod had achieved. Budimlija remarked that Elrod’s 5 million miles were equal to “driving to the moon and back over 10 times” or “driving around the equator 200 times” without a single crash.

Statistics show that, nationwide, approximately 400,000 trucks are involved in accident each year. From these accidents, more than 100,000 people are injured, and around 4,000 people do not survive their injuries. In the state of Georgia, more than 5,000 truck accidents occur each year, with 200 of these accidents resulting in fatal injuries.

In accepting his honor, Elrod thanked YRC Freight, commenting about how well the company had treated him and his family through the years of his employment. He said he was from a family of truck drivers that included his father, two uncles, a brother, and a brother-in-law. Elrod said trucking was in his blood, and he always put safety first.
