Tractor Trailer Truck Accident on Interstate 16 in Lauren County, Georgia

LAURENS COUNTY, GA. – March 2, 2018 (13wmaz.com) According to a news report by 13wmaz.com, a March 2 tractor trailer collision on Interstate 16 has resulted in the death of one person.*

The accident occurred at approximately 5:45 a.m. at milepost 45 on I-16 in Laurens County. Two tractor trailers were involved in the collision, one of which was carrying 16,000 pounds of tangerines. Sukhdeep Singh, 23, of Fairfield, California, was driving the truck filled with tangerines, which flipped onto its side following the crash. He was reportedly carrying the cargo to Bloomingdale near Savannah.

Singh did not survive the crash. At the time of the news report, the other tractor trailer driver had not yet been identified, and his or her condition was unknown.

The accident marked the second major tractor-trailer accident in Laurens County that week and one of many recent semi-truck collisions in the county. The other accident in the county that week also occurred on I-16, near mile marker 64. In response, the Georgia State Patrol said it intended to increase patrol presence along the interstate.

The Georgia Department of Transportation recently estimated that approximately 24,000 vehicles travel I-16 each day. About 20 percent of those vehicles are tractor trailers. Georgia State Patrol said a lot of trucks use the interstate to travel to the port of Savannah, and that activity would likely increase with the widening of the port. Troopers encourage drivers to use caution around semi-trucks, avoid following too closely, and pass them carefully.

Georgia State Patrol is investigating the cause of the March 2 accident, which left one lane of I-16 shut down for approximately 12 hours.
