Drunk Driver Crashes Into a Parked on Interstate 85 in Newman, Georgia
NEWNAN, GA. – March 27, 2018 (Times-herald.com) According to a news report from Times-herald.com, a 26-year-old man is charged with driving under the influence after crashing into a parked car March 24 on Interstate 85.*
Gary Deandre Johnson was driving his Nissan Maxima southbound on I-85 just before 2:45 a.m., when he crashed into a car on the side of the interstate near Exit 47. Georgia State Patrol reports that a Kia Soul was waiting in the emergency lane for assistance because of a blown tire when Johnson slammed into the back of it.
Johnson’s Maxima spun across three lanes of traffic after the impact and struck the median wall. The Kia occupants were thankfully unharmed, despite the force of the crash and Johnson’s failure to break prior to hitting the back of the car. Both occupants were also wearing their seatbelts at the time of the crash.
Johnson was transported to Piedmont Newnan Hospital, where he was medically cleared. He reportedly admitted to drinking before the accident, and his breathalyzer test result was .139, well above the legal limit of .08.
Upon release from Piedmont Newnan Hospital, Johnson was transported to the Coweta County Jail with charges of driving under the influence, failure to maintain a lane, driving on a divided highway, following too closely, and failure to wear a seatbelt. Authorities are continuing their investigation of the crash, and charges are still pending. Johnson has been released from jail on bond.
