Fatal Car Accident in Savannah Drive and Georgia Highway 22 in Jones County, Georgia

March 27, 2018

JONES COUNTY, GA. – March 2, 2018 (macon.com) According to a news report by macon.com, a 46-year-old Jones County resident suffered fatal injuries on March 2, after another driver hit her car head-on while traveling on Ga. 22.*

Natasha Farlar was driving her Dodge Charger northbound toward Baldwin County on Ga. 22 at about 6 a.m. on March 2, when a Chevrolet pickup driven by Gary Christopher Smith, 46, crossed the center line and struck her vehicle head-on. The collision occurred shortly past Savannah Drive in Jones County. An ambulance crew was traveling southbound behind the pickup immediately prior and witnessed the crash. According to Jeff Robinson, a fatality investigator for the Jones County Sheriff’s Department, the ambulance crew reported that Smith failed to maintain his lane and struck Farlar’s car.

Both vehicles came to a stop beyond the right shoulder of Ga. 22’s northbound lane. The crash caused the pickup to roll onto its passenger side and to lose the driver’s side front wheel, while causing extensive damage to the front and driver’s side of the Charger. Emergency response pronounced Farlar dead at the scene shortly before 8 a.m. Smith went to the Medical Center, Navicent Health, in Macon to be treated for his injuries. At the time of the news report investigators planned to interview Smith about the circumstances of the crash as soon as he was able to provide information.

Investigator Robinson noted a coincidental detail about the two accident victims that he described as “almost spooky”: Smith and Farlar shared a birthday, down to the year. According to Robinson, they were born on the same day in 1971.

Northbound traffic on Ga. 22 was shut down following the accident to allow emergency response to clear the wreckage, with officers alternating traffic in the southbound lane for approximately three hours.
