I-20 Accident Involving Car Parked on Shoulder of Highway Leaves One Person Dead

Given how fast vehicles travel on the highway, there is a significant risk that if an accident occurs, anyone involved may suffer severe injuries or death.  11alive.com reports on a recent I-20 accident has raised concerns about highway accidents that involve parked cars on the shoulder of the highway, as a late-morning three-vehicle accident on I-20 tragically left one person dead and another injured.  A tan Honda Accord was parked on the right shoulder of the highway heading eastbound on I-20, while a white pickup truck traveling eastbound struck the parked Honda Accord. The impact pushed the pickup truck into the middle of the highway, causing it to strike a third vehicle.  An investigation is still ongoing to determine if any other factors played a role in this accident.

  • Such factors include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Whether any driver was under the influence of alcohol or drugs at the time of the accident;
  • Where exactly the tan Honda Accord was parked on the shoulder of the highway;
  • Whether the driver of the pickup truck or the driver of the third vehicle were speeding at the time the accident occurred;
  • Whether the driver of the pickup truck could see the Honda Accord parked on the side of the road before the accident occurred;
  • Whether the driver of the pickup truck was distracted at the time the accident, such as texting, talking on the phone, or listening to loud music while driving;
  • The reason why the Honda Accord was parked on the right shoulder of southbound I-20; and
  • Whether there is anything the driver of the pickup truck could have done to prevent this accident from happening.

The Dangers of Parking on the Shoulder of the Highway

Most likely, the Honda Accord had broken down, and the driver was waiting for assistance before being struck by the white pickup truck.  This accident demonstrates just how dangerous it can be to park on the shoulder of the highway.  However, when a car breaks down, there is not much the driver can do other than pull over to the side of the road.  As such, all drivers and passengers who find themselves having car trouble should take all precautions to protect themselves while they wait for assistance.

Such precautionary steps include, but are not limited to, putting your car’s flashers on and to call for help immediately while taking any additional steps to help ensure you are visible to passing drivers on the highway.

It is tragic that a person lost his life simply because he had car trouble and no choice but to park on the side of the highway.  In cases where victims survive the accident, they still may be stuck with debilitating injuries that have the potential to become permanent.  In situations where someone else may be responsible for a person's injuries, that person or loved ones may seek to hold the driver liable for causing the accident.  However, before blame can be placed on somebody, it can important for any injured individual or loved ones of a deceased victim to seek the guidance of a legal professional at Montlick & Associates.
