Tragic Day On Metro-Atlanta Roads: Six High School Students Died In Separate Crashes On Monday

April 25, 2017

Atlanta-area high school students, parents, and teachers are forced to come to grips with the horrible news that six teenaged students died and one injured in two separate accidents on Monday, April 24, 2017. One accident happened in Cobb County and the other in Fulton County. Both accidents remain under investigation by law enforcement officials.

According to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, the first crash occurred at approximately 1 p.m.in Roswell, Cobb County on Highway 92. Two brothers were killed while they were traveling to a dentist appointment after leaving school for the day. One young man was a senior, and the other was a freshman at a local High School.

According to initial reports, the high school students struck a school bus carrying special needs children. Law enforcement investigators said the car in which the two boys were riding went under the school bus. The boys died on impact. Four special needs students reported that they were shaken up from the accident but did not suffer any injuries. The crash shut state road 92 down for about two hours.

Both young men will be remembered fondly by the community in which they lived. They were junior ROTC members and volunteered at local charitable organizations. The senior was only one month away from his high school graduation and had plans to attend college in the fall in addition to joining the Marines.

Tragedy struck again a short time later. Sadly, four additional teenage boys died, and another was severely hurt in a severe crash a few hours after the Cobb County crash. This accident also occurred on state road 92, but in Fulton County. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported that an SUV carrying the four teenage boys and a girl slammed into a tractor trailer truck. The SUV was destroyed, and the tractor-trailer was severely damaged.

A witness who saw the accident recounted the frightening and heartbreaking scene. The witness told reporters that she saw the SUV as she and her sister passed by and realized, in horror, that a person was inside. She exited the car in which she was riding and ran to try to help. All she saw was carnage when she looked inside. The witness said she saw a boy who was trapped in the car take his last breath and expire right in front of her. Two others were trapped inside as well. Further, a teenage girl was pinned in the third-row seat by her legs. The witness also saw that a young man was ejected from the vehicle during the crash and was lying motionless under the tractor trailer. The horrified witness said she could not do anything to help, so she just started praying. However, she did say that the girl was able to free herself from the wreckage.

The preliminary law enforcement investigation revealed that the driver of the SUV ran a red light at Butner Road and Ga. 92. The SUV slammed into the tractor after running the red light. The driver of the tractor-trailer suffered minor injuries and was transported to a local hospital for treatment. The cause of the crash remains under investigation.

Fortunately for the teenage girl in the third row, she is expected to make a full and complete recovery from the crash.
