Georgia Teenager Suffers Fatal Injuries Following Tragic I-475 Head-On Collision

Anytime a teenager suffers severe or fatal injuries as a result of a car accident, the aftermath is especially tragic. Teenagers have their entire lives ahead of them, and one accident can change everything in the blink of an eye. A recent Macon car accident resulted in the death of a 19-year-old after the teen was struck head-on by an oncoming vehicle, according to a local news report. As the teenager was merging onto I-475, he lost control of his car and crossed over the median into the southbound lanes of I-475. An SUV traveling in a southbound lane did not see the teenager's car and could not avoid striking the vehicle. The driver of this SUV and her daughter were taken to a hospital for treatment, and their condition is unknown.*

Reasons Why Drivers Lose Control of Their Cars

As with any accident, there are countless reasons why a driver may lose control of his or her car. Such reasons include, but are certainly not limited to, the following:

  • Distracted Driving – This continues to be a common cause of car accidents that often result in severe injuries or death. Whether a driver is talking on the phone, texting, using a social media app, eating, or listening to loud music, among others, that driver's attention is not one-hundred percent focused on driving.
  • Drowsy Driving and Falling Asleep at the Wheel – Teenagers and young adults seem to be getting fewer and fewer hours of sleep these days. This lifestyle will inevitably lead to situations where these individuals are driving a car while drowsy or fatigued. This may result in a situation where the driver falls asleep at the wheel and losing control of his or her car.
  • Medical Events – We all know that anyone can suffer from a medical emergency at any time. Such medical events drivers may experience include but are not limited to, the following: complications related to sleep apnea, seizures/epilepsy, heart attack, stroke, or an asthma attack.
  • Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol or Drugs – Even though the consequences of impaired driving are obvious, many young drivers still make the decision to get behind the wheel while under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Driving under the influence most certainly can contribute to a driver losing control of a car and causing an accident.

Perhaps the reasons listed above played a role in the teenager's head-on collision. However, an investigation has not yet identified any particular cause of the accident. Unknown factors may have contributed to this accident, and only a thorough evaluation of what happened will help to find the cause of the head-on collision that ended a teenager's life all too soon.
