Fatal Wrong-Way Crash on I-85 Kills One, Injures Another
Jackson County, Ga., - According to AccessWCUN, a wrong-way driver on Interstate 85 was killed early Friday morning when he struck another vehicle going in the other direction.
Officials from Jackson County stated that the accident began in the early morning hours just before 3:30 a.m. A sheriff's deputy from Jackson County observed the car navigating erratically on the highway close to the Dry Pond Road exit. The deputy tried stopping the vehicle. However, the driver accelerated away from the police unit and exited at the Jefferson exit. Officials stated that after the motorist successfully attempted some turns on US 129 going in the north direction, he re-entered I-85, driving north on the southbound side.
The driver slammed into a vehicle driving on that southbound side near mile point 143. The at-fault motorist's car burst into flames, instantly killing him. The driver of the opposite-direction vehicle endured serious wounds and was brought to the local medical center in Gainesville.
The two driver's names involved in the incident have not yet been made public.
Both I-85 north and southbound lanes were blocked to all traffic for nearly three hours during the A.M. rush hour Friday morning.
Both the local county sheriff's office and the Georgia State Police are leading the investigation.
