Jackson County, Ga., (JacksonHeraldToday) - A fatal accident on I-85 South occurred after a person who was stopped for a traffic violation attempted to flee police. The driver of an Audi A4 was pulled over near mile point 145.5.

Initially, the vehicle left the interstate at the Jefferson exit. It then entered onto Hwy. 129 North, but then got on Interstate I-85 once more, driving in the wrong direction on the southbound side. Police made every attempt to warn on-coming vehicles of the dangers in front of them to in order to help them avoid serious accidents.

Officers found the driver of the Audi had perished after the car collided with a Subaru. A resident of Newport News, Virginia, he was not strapped in his seatbelt, and was tragically killed. The 23-year old had a license that was revoked and several warrants out for his arrest and apprehension in his home state. The warrants were all for miscellaneous traffic charges.

Deputies also identified illegal drugs and a handgun that was stolen in the car.

The man who was driving the Subaru, a resident of Alto, was taken to a Gainesville medical center for what were thankfully deemed non-life threatening injuries.

An investigation is underway, and a blood test will be performed on the driver of the Audi to determine whether or not he was under the influence at the time of the accident.

A southbound lane of I-85 was closed to traffic for almost three hours while the investigation took place.
