Fatal School Bus Crash in Lowndes County Georgia

Lownes County, Ga., (WALB) - It was reported by WALB on August 29, 2016, a semi tractor-trailer hauling a load of beams collided with a bus filled with school children on I-75 in Lowndes County.
A 15-year-old girl from Valdosta was transported to South Georgia Medical Center following the collision. She tragically passed away from her injuries later that day.
The Freightliner semi was being driven by a 58 year old man from Illinois. The metal beams and the tractor-trailer struck the rear door of the bus on the driver's side.
The school bus driver, a woman from Valdosta, suffered a leg injury, which was treated at South Georgia Medical Center.
The commercial truck driver suffered no injuries.
Thirteen students were taken to SGMC for their wounds. Private vehicles took six other children to the same hospital.
The Lowndes County School System released the following statement after the accident:
State Patrol stated that the incident was located at mile point 16 on Interstate 75 on the southbound side.
Bus 0908 from the Lowndes County school system was transporting its high school students to the middle school when the incident occurred with the tractor-trailer.
All students who suffered no injuries were being transported to Lowndes Middle School so that they could be picked up by their parents.
The Lowndes County School system is making counselors, social workers and other staff available to students, teachers, and administration in the days ahead.
The wreck continues to be under investigation. It will be determined whether charges will be filed after the inquiry is completed.
