Tragic, Fatal Four-Vehicle Crash on Knox Bridge Highway in Emerson, Georgia
EMERSON, GEORGIA - According to an online news report published on 11alive.com, the Mayor of the City of Emerson was involved in a fatal four-vehicle accident.* The news report states that the Mayor and his wife were tragically killed in a car crash caused. The four-vehicle crash occurred on Knox Bridge Highway, east of Field Landing Road, at around 4 PM.
The Cherokee County Sheriff's Office deputies answered the call to the accident. The Cherokee County Sheriff's Office reported that the driver of a Chevrolet pickup truck, a 50-year-old man from Calhoun, lost control of his truck and then crossed the middle line colliding head-on with a Hyundai Santa Fe that was moving in the opposite direction.
The Hyundai driver, the Mayor, and his wife, tragically passed away at the scene of the collision.
Georgia Governor Brian Kemp stated that his family is "heartbroken" after hearing the tragic news. He said, "They will be deeply missed by their loved ones and the community that they served so well."
Law enforcement officials stated that the pickup truck overturned and was hit by a GMC and a Mazda 3 was hit by the Chevrolet.
Emerson City Manager Kevin McBurnett stated that the Mayor and his wife were a staple of the Emerson community for more than 40 years. The Mayor served the Emerson citizens as a city councilman for 23 years and 15 years as Mayor. The Mayor's wife always provided him with the framework for his powerful leadership.
The pickup truck driver was arrested and allegedly criminally charged with DUI, first-degree vehicular homicide, reckless driving, and serious injury by a motor vehicle. He was also hurt in the crash and is receiving medical treatment at an undisclosed hospital.
The Mazda 3 driver and the GMC Savanna driver were taken to Wellstar Kennestone Hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.
