Tragic, Fatal Tanker Truck Accident on Turner McCall Boulevard in Polk County, Georgia
GEORGIA - An auto accident reports that a sports utility vehicle driver was involved in a tragic, fatal accident with a tanker truck on Turner McCall Boulevard in Polk County, Georgia.*
The crash occurred between East Eighth Street and Cooper Drive, according to the Georgia State Patrol crash investigators. According to the Georgia State Patrol, the crash happened around 10 in the morning, and at least one traffic lane along Turner McCall Boulevard continued to be closed most of the afternoon.
The Georgia State Patrol issued a statement saying the SUV crossed the median line for some unknown reason and crashed head-on with a tanker truck that was carrying corn syrup. The tanker truck then burst into flames, causing tremendous amounts of smoke. Fortunately, the truck fire was extinguished before it reached the truck's trailer.
Tragically, the SUV driver was killed in the collision due to life-threatening injuries. The tank truck driver was not hurt in the head-on collision. The Polk County Coroner identified the SUV driver as a 70-year-old woman.
According to the accident news report, a utility pole was seriously damaged during the crash, and this caused the utility lines to fall down onto the road. Power in sections of Rome was out for about one hour after the head-on collision. This also caused the traffic signals in the area to not operate.
Georgia State Patrol troopers and the Motor Carrier Compliance Division officers answered the call to the accident scene to help with traffic control and to aid in the accident investigation. The Georgia State Patrol Specialized Collision Reconstruction Team also rearrived at the accident scene to investigate the fatal collision after the Rome Police Department made the request.
The names of the head-on collision victims were not provided by the Georgia State Patrol or the County Coroner. This accident investigation will continue, and the news agency will update its coverage of this accident news story when more details are received.
The Rome Police Department, Georgia State Patrol, and Motor Carrier Compliance Division managed the accident scene and worked to help the accident victims.
