Fatal Tractor-Trailer Truck Accident on I-285 West by Sandy Springs, Georgia

September 22, 2022

SANDY SPRINGS, GEORGIA - According to an online news report published on 11Alive.com, Sandy Springs Police confirmed that one person was tragically killed in a truck accident in Sandy Springs, Georgia.*

The news report also stated that all traffic was at a standstill at the top end of the Perimeter due to the rush hour truck crash. The fiery crash happened when one tractor-trailer truck rear-ended another 18-wheeler truck that was hauling magnesium and scrap metal.

The Georgia Department of Transportation's traffic cameras in the area showed a smoldering 18-wheeler truck on the side of I-285 Westbound, before New Northside Drive. Sandy Springs police reported that all westbound traffic lanes and three inside eastbound traffic lanes would be closed for several hours. Those eastbound traffic lanes were reopened at around 7 PM.

According to law enforcement authorities, the crash caused an explosion, and the truck driver was tragically killed. Accident investigators stated that the intensity of the fire caused the magnesium to keep relighting. By 11 PM, the Sandy Springs Police reported that all traffic lanes on I-285 were reopened.

Drivers who were trying to go from Ashford Dunwoody, Chamblee, or Sandy Springs into Cobb County were advised that they should anticipate lengthy delays, and law enforcement authorities urged them to use alternate routes. This accident story is developing, and the news agency will provide new information at a later time.

The Sandy Springs Police will continue their fatal truck accident investigation. All accident witnesses are encouraged to provide additional information that may help law enforcement with their investigation of the fatal truck accident. The names of the victim and those involved in the fatal truck accident have not been made public. No criminal charges were reported at this time.
