Georgia Woman Tragically Paralyzed During a Routine Chiropractor Treatment for Neck Pain in Savannah, Georgia

July 15, 2022

A tragic news report published on foxnews.com states that a college student from Georgia was paralyzed during a routine chiropractor treatment for neck pain.*

The recent Georgia Southern University graduate was rushed to a local trauma center for treatment and is listed in critical medical condition. The report states that she sustained a traumatic brain injury.

The victim, a 28-year-old woman, visited an unnamed chiropractor to receive a neck adjustment. However, emergency room tests discovered that she sustained four dissected arteries in her neck. The injuries caused the victim to suffer a stroke, and she went into cardiac arrest. She also did not have a pulse for ten minutes before the victim was successfully resuscitated. She is currently being treated in the Intensive Care Unit at a hospital. Emergency Medical Services and E.R. staff were able to keep her stable until she could be rushed into surgery to repair the torn arteries. One stent was placed inside one artery.

The victim's mother stated that the treating physicians blamed the chiropractic neck manipulation for causing the injuries.

The chiropractor who performed the neck adjustment has not been made public at this time. The news reporters attempted to interview the chiropractor. However, the chiropractor declined to comment, citing HIPAA privacy laws. The chiropractor's office contacted 911 to obtain emergency medical help for their patient. They told 911 that the victim was 'having a reaction to the treatment.'"

The victim's family stated that she is now paralyzed after the routine chiropractor treatment. She is being treated at the neuro ICU in Memorial Hospital located in Savannah, Georgia. She sustained a traumatic brain injury and is conscious. She can respond to verbal communication by blinking her eyes, move her left foot toes, and subtly squeeze things with her hands. Tragically, that is about all she can do at this time. The link provided at the end of this article links to an article with the victim's GoFundMe page. The incident is currently under investigation.

These types of civil cases are known as medical malpractice cases. In Georgia, a victim of medical negligence must file their claim before the state's statute of limitations. In other words, a medical malpractice claimant in Georgia generally has two years from the date of the injury to file a lawsuit in pursuit of compensation against the negligent practitioner, medical clinic, and/or hospital. However, this is subject to exceptions. Medical Malpractice includes treatment errors, mis-diagnosis, failure to diagnose, and surgical mistakes.
