TWIGGS COUNTY, GEORGIA - According to an accident news report posted on 13wmaz.com, sections of Interstate 16 were shut down last Thursday night to clear a semi-truck accident in Twiggs County, Georgia.*
All traffic lanes were closed to remove a wrecked semi-truck. At 8 PM one traffic lane remained open for westbound traffic starting at mile marker 17. The news report stated that, on occasion, both traffic lanes were closed while crews worked to clean up the accident debris and remove the wrecked truck. Alternate routes around the truck accident included Exit 18 at Bullard Road, Highway 80, or Highway 129.
According to Sheriff Darren Mitchum, the crash was caused by two semi-tractor-trailer trucks. One of the trucks was in the right lane and sustained a tire blowout. The blowout caused the truck to swerve over toward the semi-tractor-trailer truck in the left lane. The truck that was riding in the left lane then lost control and drover between two bridges and fell on its top in a creek.
Emergency rescuers pulled the driver out of the truck, and he was transported, by helicopter, to the Medical Center, Atrium Health Navicent in Macon.
Emergency crews worked to rescue a driver from a wreck on Interstate 16 in Twiggs County, according to Twiggs County Sheriff Darren Mitchum with the Twiggs County Sheriff's Office. Rescue crews had to cut the driver out of his truck. No additional details on the truck accident or the cause of the crash were released at this time.
