Tragic Equipment Accident Kills One in Sumter County
AMERICUS, GEORGIA - According to several news reports, including walb.com, one person was tragically killed in an equipment accident last Friday.*
According to the Sumter County Fire Rescue's Facebook post, the SCFR was dispatched at around 1:35 PM. The accident report states that one person was pinned underneath heavy equipment at the Plains Experiment Station.
The report states that after officials arrived at the accident scene, they found that a grain bin elevator had collapsed. One victim was entrapped by the grain bin elevator that employees had already removed. Law enforcement officials stated that attempts to resuscitate the victim by Sumter County Fire Rescue and Gold Star EMS personnel were not successful.
Sumter County Sheriff's Office deputies also help at the accident scene. The workplace accident will be investigated by the Sumter County Sheriff's Office and other governmental agencies. Typically, OSHA heads up all workplace accident investigations.
