Cornelia Police Release a Video Showing Their Officer Texting While Driving Causing a Severe Rear-end Collision

May 23, 2022

According to an online news report published on nowhabersham.com, the Cornelia Police Department has released an officer's dashcam video that shows the law enforcement texting while driving and then rear-ending a stopped vehicle on Georgia 105/Cannon Bridge Road in Demarest, Georgia.*

The law enforcement officer's cruiser struck an SUV that was legally stopped. Two teenaged were inside the SUV during the severe rear-end collision. The rear-end collision resulted in accident-related injuries, and the two vehicles were disabled.

According to the news report, the rear-end collision occurred at around 5:30 PM as the law enforcement officer was heading to the Cornelia Police Department to begin his shift. The Habersham County Sheriff's Department's accident report states that The officer was heading eastbound along Canon Bridge Road in his Dodge Durango SUV when he rear-ended a Toyota Forerunner.

The teen driver was stopped awaiting a motor vehicle that was approaching in the opposite direction in order to make a left-hand turn onto Sweet Briar Drive. The dashcam video released shows the law enforcement officer driving at a consistent speed, not reducing his speed, and then colliding into the rear of the stopped Toyota SUV.

After reviewing the dashboard camera video, the Cornelia Police Department ascertained that the police officer was texting and driving just prior to the collision.

The victim's father stated that the law-enforcement officer was thankful that the kids survived the incident considering that the lawn Forssman officer was driving at approximately 50 to 60 mph. The motor vehicle accident is still currently under investigation, and no other incident information has been provided at this time.
