Street Racing Blamed for a Fatal Car Accident on State Route 348 in Union County, Georgia

April 26, 2022

UNION COUNTY, GEORGIA - According to an accident news article published on nowhabersham.com, Georgia State Patrol positively identified the motorist who was tragically killed in a car accident during a police chase in White County, Georgia.*  The victim was a 37-year-old resident of Gainsville.  Georgia State Patrol troopers stated that the victim collided with another motor vehicle head-on during a police chase along State Route 17 by Helen.  The fatal accident also tragically injured the driver who was operating the other motor vehicle involved in the head-on collision.

According to Georgia State Patrol, the car crash occurred after a Georgia State Patrol trooper tried to perform a traffic stop on two motor vehicles for speeding along State Route 348 in Union County by Lone Piper Road.  Sergeant B.D. Taylor stated that as the Georgia State Patrol trooper tried to catch up with the racing vehicles, the drivers saw the trooper's emergency lights activated and attempted to elude the trooper.

The Mitsubishi Lance and the Dodge Challenger fled south on SR 348 into White County, Georgia.  As the two cars approached SR 75 Alt, the two cars turned north.  Then at the intersection of Highway 17 and Highway 75 Alt, the Mitsubishi Lancer driver turned northbound, and the Dodge Challenger turned southbound.  The trooper continued to pursue the Mitsubishi Lancer north on State Route 17.  As the Mitsubishi Lancer tried to negotiate a curve while driving at a high rate of speed, it crossed over the road's centerline and crashed head-on into a Nissan Murano SUV.  The Mitsubishi Lancer came to rest at the bottom of the road's embankment.  The Murano came to a final rest in the roadway and was lightly struck by a third vehicle on the passenger side door area.

The motor vehicle accident fatally injured one of the racers, and he tragically passed away at Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainsville, Georgia.  Fortunately, the victim, a 65-year-old man from Colbert, was transported to Northeast Georgia Medical Center in serious condition but was in stable medical condition.

Criminal charges are pending against the driver of the Dodge Challenger.  Charges include murder, and there are criminal charges pending against him in White and Union counties.  The other charges allegedly include DUI, first-degree vehicular homicide, street racing, serious injury by vehicle, fleeing, reckless stunt driving, reckless driving, speeding, aggressive driving, and several other violations.
