High Gas Prices Create Pent-Up Demand for E-scooters
According to an online news report published on foxbusiness.com, E-scooters are becoming an extremely popular way of commuting since gas prices are skyrocketing. Although electric cars are another option, the low purchase price of electric scooters has some people choosing to choose E-scooters as a transportation option.
People are generally familiar with rental scooter services, but a lot of people are purchasing their own E-scooters.
According to Nicholas Corben-Smith, a scooter repair shop owner, the popularity of micro-mobility is beginning to surge. He also stated that the scooter market was growing rapidly, but the recent spike in gas prices has caused even more demand. Right now, repairing old scooters and selling new ones is big business. Mr. Corben-Smith stated that the scooter market has recently "increased tenfold."
Some scooter purchasers have stated that they bought their scooters due to the high cost of parking in the city where they work or live. The cost of a scooter is often recouped in a month or so due to not having to pay parking fees.
Scooter company Bird, which has a scooter rental business model, has stated that its national sales have increased by about 60%, and the company's website traffic shot up 30% following the initial gas price spike. Bird is offering incentives to encourage people to trade in their used cars for a new e-bike.
Spin, a scooter company, reports that it has seen a boost in scooter rentals. The company believes this boost is a result of several factors, including good weather, high gasoline prices, and workers returning to the office post-COVID.
Lime, another e-scooter rental company, states that its scooter rental segment has been growing before gas prices climbed. The company reported a 66.5% increase in rentals this past February as compared to last February.
A scooter owner who was interviewed in the Fox Business news article stated that scooters make it easy and fast to maneuver through the entire city without waiting for a train or bus. The scooter owner states that he has been saving $150 a month since he no longer has to pay for public transportation and parking.
