Tragic, Fatal House Gas Explosion in Polk County, Georgia

December 15, 2021

POLK COUNTY, GEORGIA - A news article published on 11alive.com reports that an elderly woman has been tragically killed in a home explosion.*

The fatal incident occurred in Polk County, Georiga.  The fire department reported that the 83-years-old victim was discovered under the debris.  Her name is not being released to the public at this time.

Firefighters stated that the blast originated from a propane explosion inside the woman's home.  The explosion occurred last Saturday at around 9:30 AM.  The location of the accident was on Winkle Road, just south of Cedartown.  Neighbors who lived several miles away heard the explosion.

The Polk County Fire Department reported that the 1,290-square-foot home was completely destroyed in the blast.

Safety Fire Commissioner John F. King reported that the elderly woman was killed in the home explosion.  The report also states that the home was so damaged that it was "hard to tell a house was ever there."

One neighbor reported that her husband had jumped over the fence to try to help the woman who lived inside the home.  However, the volatility of the situation stopped him from getting to the woman.  Other neighbors stated that they knew the woman was inside, praying for her family and doing what they could to assist the victim.

The Polk County Police posted a Facebook message stating, "please remember the family of the deceased in your prayers."  Fire investigators are looking into the details of the blast.  The news report states that this is the 114th fatality from a Georgia fire in 2021.
