Severe 18-wheeler Accident on I-20 Eastbound at the Georgia / South Carolina Border

September 14, 2021

AUGUSTA, GEORGIA - A news report published on wjbf.com states that the Richmond County Sheriff's Office Deputies responded to the scene of a serious motor vehicle accident on I-20 Eastbound by the state line.*  A tanker truck was involved in an accident that resulted in a severe vehicle fire.

The news report states that the crash transpired along I-20 Eastbound and shut down the interstate for several hours.  Law enforcement urged motorists to use alternative routes around the truck accident.

The Augusta Fire & EMA reported on Twitter that the crash involved three people, the truck driver and two people riding in a car.  One of the accident victims was evaluated at the accident scene.

The Georgia Department of Transportation will assess the bridge to ensure all chemicals are cleaned up and the bridge is safe.  Moreover, because of the accident on Riverwatch Parkway and I-20 East, kayakers and water enthusiasts were prohibited from using the Augusta Canal for one day.  The fuel tanker truck accident is currently under investigation by law enforcement officers.
