Eight People Injured in a Car Accident on I-16 at Dean Forest Road in Savannah, Georgia

SAVANNAH, GEORGIA - A news report published on wsav.com states that a three-vehicle accident with serious injuries shut down all of the eastbound traffic lanes along Interstate 16 at Dean Forest Road.*  According to the Pooler Police Department, the "severe accident," sent eight people to a local area hospital with serious injuries.

The major accident happened at around 1 PM.  According to the Georgia State Patrol (GSP), it is leading the accident investigation.  The dent happened at around 1 PM.  According to the Georgia State Patrol stated that a driver was distracted and ran their car into the rear-end of a van that was stopped in traffic.  The impact of the collision caused the van to strike a pickup truck stopped in front of the van.

The Savannah Professional Firefighters Association reported "multiple entrapments" occurred during the accident.  Savannah crews, along with the Pooler Fire Department, were able to extricate three victims.

The van's seven passengers, as well as the car's driver, were transported to Memorial Health for emergency medical treatment.  The Georgia State Patrol reported that the van's occupants sustained several severe injuries such as head gashes, internal bleeding, a broken leg, and a possible broken neck. The car driver's accident injuries were not disclosed in the article. 

Multiple agencies reacted to the accident and helped divert traffic. The road was reopened at 3 PM.

The Georgia State Patrol reported that the driver, who was not identified, was cited for following too closely, distracted driving, and driving with an expired tag.  According to the police report, additional criminal charges are pending.
