Georgia Suffered an 18% Rise in Traffic Fatalities in 2020
ATLANTA, GA - A news article published new statistics showing the State of Georgia saw a significant increase in fatal traffic accidents last year. According to Channel 2′s Lori Wilson, a speeding driver tragically killed a young mother last year. Tragically, the fatal I-75/I-85 accident took the life of a 27-year-old mother. The driver is awaiting trial on a long list of criminal charges, including driving too fast for conditions and homicide by vehicle.
Several state and local law enforcement agencies have been working hard to create new strategies to combat speeding, reckless driving, and distracted driving to save innocent lives.
According to a preliminary report from the National Safety Council, the estimated death rate in the United States in 2020 grew by 24% over 2019. The report also stated that Georgia had an 18% rise in fatalities in 2020. However, the total number of traffic accidents fell from 24,000 crashes by the 4th quarter in 2019 to 16,000 crashes by the 4th quarter in 2020. This accounted for a 30% drop in traffic accidents in 2020. Yet, the number of accident fatalities grew from 318 in 2019 to 342 in 2020.
Channel 2 also filed an open records request with Georgia State Patrol to determine how many speeding tickets were written for driving over 100 miles per hour in 2018, 2019, and 2020. The number of 100+ MPH tickets rose from 1,971 in 2018 and rose to 2,248 in 2019, and then rose to 4,803 in 2020.
According to the report, the top five factors that cause traffic accidents include following too closely, driving too fast for conditions, DUI, distracted driving, and speeding.
The Georgia Department of Transportation announced that there were 1,491 traffic deaths in 2019 and 1,716 traffic deaths in 2020.
