Hart County deputy Injured in Highway 51 Accident in Reed Creek, Georgia
REED CREEK, GEORGIA - A news story on thehartwellsun.com reports that a Hart County Sheriff's deputy sustained bone fractures and other injuries after injuries, including broken bones in an accident as he was answering a burglary in progress call.*
The deputy was hospitalized after an accident along Ga. Highway 51. The deputy was driving along Oak Crest Drive with his emergency lights on. The collision took place in the Reed Creek area.
Hart County Sheriff Mike Cleveland stated that the injured Hart County Sheriff's deputy is receiving treatment for his serious injuries that he received in the accident. Fortunately, the Hart County Sheriff's deputy's injuries as not life-threatening.
Georgia State Patrol Sergeant Cameron Fleming reported that the deputy was heading northbound on Ga. 51. The deputy had his emergency lights turned on when a Jeep Cherokee attempted to make a left turn onto Mt. Hebron Road. As the deputy tried to pass the Jeep on the left, the Jeep turned left in the southbound lane, and the deputy's car struck the driver's side area of the Jeep.
Following the impact, the deputy's car moved off of the left shoulder for about 300 feet, then hit a tree and overturned.
Fortunately, the Jeep Cherokee driver did not suffer any injuries. Neither driver is expected to face criminal charges. A good lesson for both law enforcement and the public can be learned from the accident. Law enforcement officers have a duty to drive safely when responding to emergency situations, and the public should be careful to pay attention to emergency lights and keep their radios turned do enough to hear emergency vehicle sirens and horns.
